Cranberries are often known as the antioxidant powerhouse. They succeed almost all fruits and vegetables when it comes to antioxidants including strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and even spinach and broccoli.

These berries are a great superfood to implement into your diet. They come with a variety of benefits to your health. Here are some of those benefits.

Prevents UTIs

Cranberries are perhaps best known for their role in preventing UTIs. High levels of proanthocyanidins in cranberries helps to lower the adhesion of bacteria to the urinary tract walls, which helps to fight off infections.

Actual cranberries and cranberry extracts are far more effective in preventing bacterial adhesion than cranberry juice, however, because it takes a large concentration of the berry to do so.

The same compounds that prevent bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls also aids in fighting tooth decay.

Good for the Heart

Cranberries are incredibly heart healthy. According to a study which was published by the British Journal of Nutrition, people who are able to drink a glass of unsweetened cranberry juice a day have increased levels of HDL cholesterol, otherwise known as good cholesterol.

Polyphenols which are present in cranberries may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by preventing platelet buildup and reducing blood pressure, and since cranberries are rich in antioxidants, they promote a healthy immune system and reduce the odds of getting sick.
